Gig Harbor Helps the Troops!
Gig Harbor’s Mayor’s wife looks to community to assist with project for Fort Lewis
Dianne Hunter says she doesn't know any of the troops. She frankly doesn't know a whole lot about the military. But she does know that the men and women from Joint Base Lewis-
McChord are great neighbors and supporters of Gig Harbor, Hunter's lifelong home. And she wants to show that her community supports them.
That's why she has taken on another project to support the single soldiers returning home who do not have family in the area. This project is an extension of the cookie drive she organized in December, which brought in over 5000 cookies for the troops. Now, the First Lady of Gig Harbor is working with spouses of troops, who help prepare the barracks for the single men and women who do not have spouses and families to return to. As each soldier checks back into the barracks, they will be provided with a "bag of essentials" on each bed. A small token to help as the get organized prior to finding time to do their own shopping. The "goodie bag" will include toiletries as well as snacks and bottled water.

SalmonChanted hits the Harbor!
Heron we come!
Gig Harbor welcomes the return of SalmonChanted Harbor again this year beginning in May. But this year there is a new twist…those salmon look suspiciously like heron!
Organizers of the third annual art event decided to shake it up in 2010, with heron sculptures instead of salmon. The heron is a bird frequently seen in and around the waters of Gig Harbor bay and other bays and estuaries in the area. These amazing resin sculpture shells have been distributed to 15 local artists. The artists were chosen from a pool of candidates for their unique ideas to make the heron shell into a work of art.
Each artist will create a different themed heron (see list below) and each piece of art will be displayed at a different location throughout historic Gig Harbor from late May through early September. The heron will then be auctioned at the SalmonChanted Evening event, scheduled for September 18th at the Gig Harbor Yacht Club.
All of the sculptures will debut at an event at the Gig Harbor Civic Center, 3510 Grandview Street on Wednesday May 26th from 6-8p.m.

Street Scramble is back
By Guest Blogger Glenn Rogers
On your marks, get set, GO! Do you need some motivation to kick off your running season? Do you like to ride your bike around the Harbor? Have you ever wondered what was down at the end of an old street in
The Gig Harbor Street Scramble is for you. I design the Street Scramble course. I have done it every year since it started. I am a good friend of the race director and offered my services as a way for me to learn more about my community. Every year I try to focus on a different part of the Harbor for you to explore.
The Street Scramble is a fabulously fun free event put on by the City of Gig Harbor. The start is complete mayhem as the mass start has everyone going in different directions with bikes, strollers, walkers and runners all intent on obtaining as many checkpoints as they can within the time limit.

Now We Have Something to Wine About!
Lots of choices for wine in Gig Harbor
I really enjoy how Gig Harbor has become a little “wine” town. I have always loved wine, but always felt a little intimidated by it.. Recently, it seems that wine has become less pretentious. You don’t need to be a snob to enjoy it, and it is okay to admit if you are a little naive about wine. Wine is now for the average person, and if you are an average person in Gig Harbor, you are in good wine hands.
Our local grocery stores are an excellent place to purchase wine, and the staff is always helpful and friendly. I often engage them when I am browsing the shelves.
Harbor Greens has a great selection, and has a useful system of recommending their ‘favorites” right at the point of purchase, which I find very helpful. Harbor Greens Wine Bar (located next to the store in the Forza Coffee Shop) is a wonderful little place to enjoy wine, food and music. They just released a new menu at the wine bar with a Chef Special, an open face Prime Rib sandwich with blue cheese. Harbor Greens wine bar has music in May on May 7th and 8th from 7-10pm featuring The Shy Boys – Gig Harbor’s latest favorite local band. www.harborgreensmarket.com
